Manchester centre tackles regional decline in maths
A new Centre at the University of Manchester is to offer schools in the Northwest the opportunity to start teaching Further Mathematics at A/AS level again.
Schools in the region which no longer have the resource or expertise to teach the subject will now be able to draw on teaching support from the Greater Manchester Further Mathematics Centre (GMFMC), based at the University.
The GMFMC will work with 60 students in 15 schools across the Northwest throughout this academic year as part of a new initiative launched by the DfES-funded Further Mathematics Network.
The Manchester Centre will deliver A/AS level course modules to year 12 and 13 pupils in schools in Liverpool, Rochdale, Cheshire, Warrington, West Yorkshire, Derbyshire and parts of Lancashire.
Pupils will be taught by staff from the University's School of Mathematics who will deliver course material at their schools on a fortnightly basis. Teaching will be supported by online course material and revision days held at the University.
Dr John Begg, GMFMC Manager within the University's School of Mathematics, said: "We hope this scheme will trigger a major recovery in the teaching of Further Maths and will encourage more students to go on and study the subject at University."
The Manchester Centre has been established following a successful three year pilot project in which the University has been delivering Further Mathematics to students in the region.
The University has three senior tutors and two support tutors at the Centre. Between a third and a half of students in the pilot scheme went on to attain a full Further Maths qualification, the majority of whom are now studying at leading universities in the UK.
